Colour Photography

For this week's assignment, Colour Photography, I used three images to display the different techniques of colour in photography.
For the first image, I took a photograph of a hummingbird feeder that also provides a home for a garden spider. The reds and yellows caught my eye, as they are both warm colours and create an analogous scheme that draws the viewers' eye. The colours feel vibrant yet tranquil, with the sun's rays detailing all the moisture droplets, scratches on the glass and glinting spider-web. If the background was blue from the sky, I might have had a triadic colour photograph. However, I believe the analogous colours are appealing enough.

My second image is a photograph of a framed poster containing diverse phases and wardrobes of legendary, British musician and actor, David Bowie. For this photograph, my colour palette leans more towards the cool analogous scheme. The blues used as the background(s) and David Bowie's outfit, imparts a cool and contemplative atmosphere, creating a mood of introspection. I enjoyed matching analogous schemes on both the warm and cool colours of the colour wheel.

My third image is a close-up shot of the infamously colourful plant: Strelitzia reginae, the scientific name for the Birds of Paradise flower. This name comes from the unique form of its blossoms, which are native to my home country of South Africa and resemble the feathers of a bird in flight. The blooms present an eye-catching display of orange and blue/purple tones combined in a dynamic way that will continuously photograph well, and I wanted to combine the colour theme of the first two images. The colours of the plant drew my attention due to the Triadic style that their combinations bring, hopefully creating a visually appealing and dynamic composition. I chose three equidistant hues to construct a harmonious and lively colour scheme that balances contrast and unity. However, one could also argue this image is equally Split Complimentary in the colour scheme...
